As Kathy and I were watching the National Dog Show the other night, her description of Border Collies piqued my imagination.

Here is a dog breed developed to gather and control sheep in the hilly border country between Scotland and England. Known for their intense stare or “eye” with which they control their flock. They are intelligent with virtually unlimited energy, stamina and working drive. And they are highly trainable.

How I aspire to have my Dharma practice — my awareness, mindfulness and intuitive motivations — to be in the nature of a Border Collie . . . always on the job; herding and keeping my self-centered notions and reactions under control, in line and unable to branch out into my actions and activities.

Fiercely loyal, dependable; up to the task at-hand . . . never allowing the “eye” to lapse into laziness or fall asleep on the job.
