Opposites As Teachers

It is said that opposites attract . . . for those who are exposed, and pay attention, they can also teach. *** Shouting can sway emotions, creating turbulence and agitation. Divisive and hateful speech can close minds, creating fear. Harboring grudges – real or imagined – creates resentment and intolerance. Disrespect breeds untrustworthiness. Cherishing possessions … Read more

Perfect Partners

Man with feather.

My body will turn 65 years old tomorrow.

The days of breaking my body ‘in’ are long gone.
Now it is breaking ‘down’ that begins in earnest.

The hairs once on my head, thinner and more white, are increasingly ending up tangled in my brush, while those growing in my ears seem to be getting thicker and stiffer.

I’ve got a brand new ceramic left hip, and a replacement right one coming in five weeks.

There’s more, and lots of it, but here’s the point . . . I’m officially crossing into ‘old guy’ . . . not a kid anymore.
So why do I still feel like one?

The Buddhist teachings are clear: we are not our body, but we do experience our physical realities through it.

In this way, our bodies are our homes.
At least for now.

While this is still the case, I believe the focus is clear . . .

We must be the very best physical beings we can be, skillfully working within this material environment.

We do this by nourishing our minds to guide our bodies and the words and actions that emerge from them . . . to be as wise, compassionate, kind and empowering as we can possibly be. Every day, everywhere we go, with everyone we are with.

This life will one day end, and that day is growing closer.
Bits and pieces of ‘me, myself and I’ are constantly aging, maturing . . . decaying.
This is true of me, and everyone reading this.

So what . . . here’s what’s important:
What we do during our lives has and will continue to ripple outward, directly and indirectly, touching and inspiring countless others across all times and far-reaching places.

Our life products . . . our Influences.
Personal responsibility of the most beautiful sort . . . vast, delicious and endlessly important.
To genuinely see this is to joyfully own it.

Consider it your music, your movement in the eternal dance.

Age matters not.
Old body/kid-like mind.
La-dee-da . . . perfect partners.

Make . . . and share . . . your own soundtrack.

Sand Castles

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche argued that one can gauge a man’s relationship to time by the way he/she builds a sand castle. The first man will proceed hesitatingly, intent on craft but meanwhile fretting about the inevitable return of the waves . . . then upset by his loss when they finally arrive. The second … Read more

Forget not . . . Embrace

Dharma is the work of understanding what is buried and hidden in each of us. It leads us to identify who we are, and then to use what we learn to cultivate virtue and benefit . . . while maintaining a fertile atmosphere for all who cross our path to safely experience whatever aspects of … Read more

No Matter Who Is President . . .

No matter who is the American president, crocuses and pansies, daffodils and tulips, primrose and petunias will bloom as springtime brings warming sunlight. Seven Days to Trump

Seven days to go before Inauguration Day; for some a most-dreaded event. There’s been so much hand-wringing, online rants, conversation . . . heartfelt expressions of disappointment, anger, fear, disgust, disbelief, confusion, arrogance, superiority, hopelessness, disempowerment, apathy. Change is occurring. It is time to evolve. Everything is always changing: people, places, times, ideas. Those that … Read more

Dharma in Residence

New Years’ Day plus five. Well-intentioned resolutions beginning to fade? The fact is, we can’t change ingrained habits with just a few days of will-power. Ignorance is stubborn: solid, thick-skinned and often explosively powerful . . . well-equipped to knock us off-balance . . . time after time. *** But here’s the thing: When we … Read more

Make No Mistake…

Our Ignorance cannot be seen, touched, tasted, smelled, heard, or even thought. But it can be felt. It can be felt as insecurity, fear, hatred, jealousy, grandiosity, greed, cynical self-doubt, arrogance and narrow-mindedness. Unhappiness, too. Having become accustomed to its presence, we don’t find it to be acutely painful. But make no mistake, our Ignorance … Read more

New Year’s Thoughts

One calendar year is about to morph into the next, a time when people traditionally look for those personal behaviors they’d like to stop doing, and, perhaps, what they’d like to begin. If you’ve been reading these Bread Crumbs or other similar materials, and have been considering Buddhist ideas and notions or engaging in practices, perhaps you’re … Read more
